Policy priorities

International trade

Reliable access to legitimate supply chains and clear requirements for Canadian businesses trading internationally.

Our objective

Support predictable administration of lawful imports and informed consideration of market access issues.

What better policy looks like

  • Clear information about documentation, origin and tariff treatment.
  • A practical understanding of how trade measures affect smaller importers.
  • Coordination between trade policy objectives and the requirements businesses face at the border.

The evidence that matters

Identify the relevant process, jurisdiction and approximate period. Separate a government requirement from a broker, carrier or supplier practice.

Scope and context

Tariff treatment depends on the goods, their origin and the applicable rules. A trade agreement does not automatically remove excise duties, other taxes or domestic regulatory requirements.

Contribute a business perspective
